Wood We Use & Aftercare

What wood do we use for our wooden planters?

We source our wood from spruce, pine, and fir and make sure to kiln-dry it for increased stability.

Our wooden planters are also treated with a tanalisation or pressure treatment process that makes them highly resistant to rot, fungus, mould, and insects. This means that they will withstand extreme weather conditions and last longer, so you can enjoy your beautiful plant display for years to come.

In addition to their durability, wooden planters also offer a natural and rustic charm that will enhance the look of any space. Whether you're looking for a modern, sleek design or a more traditional and rustic style, we have a wooden planter to suit your taste.

Why treat your tanalised wood?

Your tanalised or pressure treated wood planter is a sturdy and durable option for your indoor or outdoor space. However, did you know that with a little extra care, it can last even longer and maintain its colour?

It's recommended to treat your tanalised wood with a timber treatment, which can easily be found at most DIY stores. Simply apply the treatment to the wood for added protection and to keep it looking its best. You only need to treat it once a year after the first year of ownership.

When can you start staining your pressure treated wood?

There is some disagreement on the best time to start staining pressure treated wood. In general, you'll want to wait until the tanalith has oxidized and the wood has dried out. This usually takes at least three days of dry weather, so moisture can escape before you apply the stain.

A quick test to determine if your wood is ready to paint is to spill a small amount of water on the surface. If the water soaks in, you can start staining. If it beads on the surface, you'll need to wait a bit longer.

However, if your timber has been kiln-dried after being pressure treated, you can stain it right away. Note that kiln-dried wood is usually marked as such and is more expensive than regular treated timber. If you're planning to paint instead, it's recommended to wait around six months without any other treatment or follow the manufacturer's instructions when using a treated wood preservative

Can you paint treated wood?

Definitely! Painting treated wood not only enhances its appearance, but also provides extra protection to the timber. However, when painting pressure treated wood, you need to be cautious. You can't paint fresh treated wood as the moisture in the timber will prevent the paint from adhering properly. You will need to buy a pressure treated wood preservative and apply it to seal the wood before painting. The instructions for these preservatives may vary, so be sure to read them carefully. They will tell you when it's appropriate to apply the preservative, how many coats are needed, and how long you need to wait before painting.

How to choose the right paint for pressure treated wood?

To achieve the best results, it's recommended to use a primer before painting. Look for a primer that's specifically designed for exterior use and can be used on pressure treated wood. Once the primer is dry, you can choose any exterior paint of your choice. However, for optimal results, it's recommended to use a latex-based paint. Oil-based paints may have trouble adhering to pressure treated wood, and a latex-based paint will last longer.

Do you need to paint or stain pressure treated wood?

No, it's not necessary. You can leave your pressure treated wood outside without any additional treatment if you prefer. However, if you want to extend its lifespan, you can consider applying preservatives, treatments, stains, or paint. It's important to note that untreated pressure treated wood will naturally change colour over time, starting from green, then fading to honey blond, and finally turning into a silvery grey colour. To prevent this color change, it's recommended to paint or stain the wood.
